A 100-meter suspension bridge will bring the Castaño Santo closer to hikers and visitors
The natural environment surrounding Real de La Quinta continues to establish itself as one of the destination’s key distinguishing features. Located very close to the residential development, the town of Istán will soon feature a new trail that will provide easier access to one of southern Europe’s most iconic trees: the Castaño Santo.
This initiative will bring residents and visitors even closer to one of the most unique sites in the Parque Nacional Sierra de las Nieves, further establishing the Costa del Sol’s inland region as a destination for nature, wellness, and outdoor experiences.
Castaño Santo: A Natural Monument with Centuries of History
The Castaño Santo is considered one of the oldest trees in the province of Málaga, with an estimated age of between 800 and 1,000 years. Its trunk, with a circumference of nearly 14 meters, and its height of nearly 30 meters, make it a true symbol of Andalusia’s natural heritage.
Beyond its ecological value, this tree is part of the region’s historical memory. Over the centuries, it has witnessed significant events linked to the Serranía de Ronda and the ancient Kingdom of Granada, reinforcing its status as a cultural and scenic landmark.
Thanks to the new trail currently under development, access will be easier and more appealing for hikers, families, and nature lovers interested in discovering one of the best-preserved areas in the region.
A route designed to enjoy the scenery
The project involves the creation of a trail approximately 13 kilometers long that will connect the town center of Istán with Castaño Santo via a route of great scenic beauty.
Among the route’s highlights is the future construction of a suspension bridge spanning nearly 100 meters over the Río Verde, which will allow visitors to cross this natural setting safely and offer new perspectives of the landscape. The route will also include natural viewpoints overlooking the Embalse de La Concepción and various sections of Mediterranean vegetation characteristic of the national park, integrating respectfully into the terrain and prioritizing the conservation of the environment.
Nature within easy reach, just minutes from Real de La Quinta
The improved connection between Istán and Castaño Santo enhances the value of the extraordinary natural setting surrounding Real de La Quinta.
This new trail will expand opportunities to enjoy nature walks and outdoor activities year-round, reinforcing a lifestyle centered on well-being and the landscape.
Furthermore, its proximity to the Parque Nacional Sierra de las Nieves solidifies the area’s position as one of the residential communities in Southern Europe most closely connected to nature, where heritage, landscape, and quality of life coexist in harmony.
